(UPDATED 10/1/24)
Dear Students, Staff, Families, and Community Members:
As you all know, the devastation to our community is widespread and despite the efforts of so many, it is taking longer to resume a sense of normalcy than we had hoped. As we continue to monitor the restoration of services and navigate the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we believe that it is best to keep school closed at least through Friday, Oct 4 for students and staff.
Our efforts need to continue focusing on the healing of our community and working with all of our emergency management agencies. We are currently using Toombs County Middle School as a 250-cot staging area for Georgia Power and assisting GEMA with the distribution of supplies in the southern part of the county.
We are especially grateful for Altamaha EMC and the efforts of other power companies to restore power to our schools, and we currently have power to all schools except TCHS. We are working diligently to make any possible repairs and to get all buildings back to working order. Just like our families, our school system is also facing the challenge of obtaining food needed to begin feeding our students again.
We will continue to update you as we know more. We are currently looking at plans for school reentry, and our goal is to update you by Friday afternoon regarding the plan for moving forward. Please help us by sharing this updated information, and stay tuned for updates via our various communication platforms: Facebook, Email, Toombs App, School Websites, Instagram, etc.

Dear Toombs County School System Students, Staff, Families and Community Members,
We pray this message finds you and your loved ones safe after the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene to our community. Our thoughts are with each and everyone affected by this storm. Your safety remains our top priority. We understand that everyone in our community is facing challenges, and we are committed to reopening our schools as soon as it is safe to do so.
The tentative timeline below will be used as our schools’ reopening plan. Please know that this plan may need to be adjusted depending on the restoration of services to the schools. We will continue to update you as we know more.
Toombs County Schools Tentative Schedule for the next few weeks:
Sept. 30 - Oct. 2: Toombs County Schools Closed to Students & Staff
Oct. 3: Staff Planning Day (Staff only)
Oct. 4: Toombs County Schools Reopen to Students (Students start back to school)
Oct. 7-9: Regular scheduled school days for students/staff
Oct. 10-14: Regular Scheduled Fall Break for students/staff
Oct 15-18: Students & Staff return to school following Fall Break (Oct. 15 was originally a staff planning day/student holiday, but it will now be a regular school day for all)
Once again, please know that this plan may need to change as the assessment of our schools continues. We are thankful to live in a community where people take care of one another. Please help us communicate by sharing this information with others. Additional updates will be posted and communicated via Facebook, Text, Toombs App, Instagram, Email, and School Websites.
Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you!
