Toombs County FFA Members Attend Dendrology Workshop
Three FFA members from Toombs County High School were among over 50 students and teachers from around the state that recently attended a dendrology workshop at Treutlen High School in Soperton on June 2, 2015. The members that attended were Erin Ricks, Stormy Knight and Chasity Denmark. The workshop offered the students the opportunity to visually inspect 78 different species of trees that are found in Georgia. Mr. Jimmy Mock, a retired agricultural education teacher, provided detailed instruction on each tree species and how to identify them based on their leaves, bark and fruit. Mr. Mock also gave students samples of each tree to take home to use for Leaf Collections. The students will also use these samples to prepare for upcoming tree identification events at Georgia National Fair in Perry.
According to Mr. Joey Montford, an agriculture teacher at Toombs County High School, “This workshop gave our kids an opportunity to view specimens of trees that are not commonly found in the southern part of Georgia. This will really benefit them as we prepare for upcoming contests and will give them a better chance to excel in those events”.
The mission of the FFA is to develop premier leadership, personal growth and career success through Agricultural Education. Georgia FFA is the 3rd largest state association with more than 37,000 student members and 290 chapters engaged in agriculturally based activities throughout the state.
