Toombs County FFA Chapter Attends the 87th Georgia Future Farmers of America Association Convention
Macon, Georgia- 21 members of the Toombs County Chapter joined more than 6,500 at the 87th Georgia FFA Convention at the Macon Centreplex, April 23-25, 2015. Members that attended the convention were the following Lindsay Wiggins, Luke Owens, Justin Hall, Coy Miller, Brad Sanders, Westley Ricks, Tiffany Reynolds, Taylor Culp, Kaitlyn Croft, Brittany Higgs, Tucker Williford, Jeffrey NeeSmith, Karlie Wright, Riley Adams, Brittney Beckum, Stormy Knight, Chasity Denmark, Meredith Jones, Caitlyn Conner, and Skyler Adams.
The convention featured six general sessions full of award presentations, motivational speakers, FFA talent, and delegate business. The Convention kickoff speaker was Mr. Harvey Alston, an educational leader, public speaker and author of Be the Best. Other speakers on the Convention docket included National FFA President Andy Paul, President of Georgia Farm Bureau, Mr. Zippy Duvall, and Georgia’s State School Superintendent, Mr. Richard Woods. In addition to the award sessions, the Convention featured a Career Show, community service projects through the Rebuilding Macon organization, and state level Career Development Event and Agriscience Fair competitions.
The Convention wrapped up on Saturday, April 25, with the conferring of the prestigious State FFA Degree on 682 members, and the naming of the 2015-2016 State FFA Officer team. The delegates of the State Convention elected eight excited young people to serve their organization for the coming year. The newly elected team consists of State President, Avery Duncan of Franklin County; State Secretary, Ian Bennett of Lowndes County; and State Vice Presidents Faith Gilman of East Jackson; Andy Kate McCannon of Oconee County; Mary Kaityln Wheeler of East Laurens; Lucouis Hodges of Peach County; Angel Rewis of Clinch County; and Christen Flowers of Brantley County.
Ben Lastly, the Executive Secretary of the Georgia FFA Association states, “We are very excited to bring the FFA Convention back to Macon for a tenth year; and excited to announce that we expect a record crowd of nearly 7,000 to attend. Our Convention is a wonderful opportunity to feature the success of so many students from across our state.” Lastly goes on to say, “Agriculture is the number one industry in Georgia, and our young people are the greatest commodity in our state. Bringing these young people together to celebrate their success in both leadership and agriculture is good for the future of our state.”
