Engineering Students Participate in Egg Drop Challenge
Toombs County High School Students in Mr. Michael Griffin's first year Engineering class completed the "Egg Drop" engineering design assignment on October 29th and tested their projects with the help of a bucket truck provided by Altamaha EMC.
The Egg Drop Activity, a standard of physics and engineering students from elementary school through university level, asks students to design a package that meets certain criteria while protecting fragile contents from a severe shock.
Mr. Griffin's students were required to research, design, and construct a container that could measure no more than 4 x 6 inches and had to be constructed of only certain materials. The class spent about a week doing research, sketching plans, and constructing their projects.
Mr. Romanus Dotson, manager of Altamaha Electric provided a bucket truck and operator to help out with the school project. The driver, Mr. Fred Clark set up the truck and worked with the students on the project. After testing the containers for the students, Mr. Clark spoke with the class about careers in his field.
While only 7 of the eggs survived, all of the students gained valuable experience in the engineering design process.
