Superintendent of Schools
Mr. Richard Smith
Richard Smith is a veteran educator who began his career as a teacher and coach in 1990. During his career, Smith has served in the roles of assistant principal, director of CTAE, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He believes that the education of all children is not only possible but our greatest mission.
Smith is grounded in the belief that the real work of education takes place in the classroom, and is performed by quality teachers. Materials and programs are the tools of those teachers, but it is the people working to build relationships at the classroom level that have the greatest impact on a child. It is the job of everyone else in the school system, including the superintendent, to support and remove barriers so that the classroom teachers can better perform their role.
In 1988, Smith earned a Bachelor's in Business Administration from Georgia College. He also holds a Masters in Administration and Supervision and a Specialist in Educational Leadership from Georgia College & State University. In 2009, Smith completed the Superintendent Professional Development Program through the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia School Superintendents Association.
Smith’s son, Will, is a manager with All Clean Cleaning and Restoration Company in Vidalia. Macy, his daughter, is a junior at Georgia Southern University, where she is working to become a Special Education teacher.
